Working in the Arctic
Explorers working in the Arctic must be equipped to endure challenging conditions. Ice breaking ships are essential for breaking through thick sheets of sea ice to travel to research sites. Survival suits are thick, insulated suits that help protect researchers on board from the cold air temperatures and splashes of freezing water. Some scientists must dive under the ice in order to collect data to answer their questions. Dry suits have special waterproof seals that keep the diver warm and dry. Underwater robots, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), are another tool for scientists exploring below the ice.
