Hydrothermal vents are interesting to many scientists, including geologists, chemists, biologists, and physical scientists. In order to better understand this extreme deep-sea habitat, explorers often carefully collect samples with the help of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to bring back to the vessel for further analysis. The manipulator arm of the ROV is able to grab samples of larger rocks and biological specimens. Slurp samplers work like vacuums and are helpful for collecting sediment samples or smaller biological specimens. Other sampling devices including nets, temperature probes, and gas samplers are also designed to be operated by the ROV’s manipulator arms.
