Artifacts and Unexpected Finds
An important aspect of studying underwater cultural heritage sites involves closely examining the artifacts that accompany the main vessel. These artifacts often provide a snapshot of what life on the boat or airplane was like before it sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Some of the finds include ship navigation equipment, artillery and ammunitions, and everyday items such as ceramics from the dining quarters. Sometimes, archaeologists find surprises during their studies. During NOAA OER expeditions, some more notable surprises have included modern day human trash (such as a SPAM can) resting amongst the wreck artifacts. Researchers have to study these areas carefully as sometimes the trash can resemble living organisms on the wrecks.
